Your Questions About Attracting Men

David asks…

When it comes to attracting men, if a smile goes a long way…..?

Why in the hell am I still single?!?!? I smile, look approachable, exude confidence, have intelligent conversation, and am nowhere near butt-ugly. So, what gives???

admin answers:

Maybe you aren’t very attractive. That smile BS was made up by some lonely girl, I’m sure.

Joseph asks…

How can I stop attracting men that treat me like a piece of meat!?

i dont show skin. i dress pretty conservative.

admin answers:

It might be where you’re meeting people. It’s not a great idea to date people you work with, so if you go to church, or have a hobby, or volunteer, make friends at those places where you already have something in common to work together on, so you can see how they treat others and what their values are.

You haven’t mentioned your age or how you look, but I know when I was young and “full-figured”, the most aggressive men were not the ones I liked. If someone treated me like I was dumb, or just a pretty face, I got away from them, since it was only down hill after that. Even though I was in the top of my class, I was treated like I was an idiot or looking for an “Mrs” in college because of how I looked. I also was shy, self-conscious, and had a low, quiet voice, so those only added to the idea that I was “dumb”, for some reason. It took a while for me to “speak up” and get the confidence to say what I did and did not want, but I was able to do it. I had to grow up fast, since I didn’t date much in high school, since we moved late in high school and it was one weird school (There wasn’t too many people I wanted to date there)!

Good luck, if you’re patient, you’ll meet someone who appreciates all of you, not just how you look, and thinks you’re the most wonderful woman in the world (I have!).

Robert asks…

Women attracting men with long hair/hairdressers don’t get it because often they are gay?

Women with long hair are a major attraction to straight men, but hair dressers always want to cut women’s hair. Is it because they are often gay??

Men and long hair on women whats the psychology?

Why is it that men (including myself) love long hair on girls?? I mean I know that long hair is HOT and SEXY but why do I feel that way??

admin answers:

Biologically speaking, the shape a woman’s hair in is tied directly to her youth and health. Long, healthy hair sends out the signal that the woman is healthy and young. Men are designed to be drawn to the healthiest women because it’s a good indicator of a woman’s fertility.

Aesthetically speaking, long hair covers up a multitude of flaws (face shape, whatever) that short hair shows off. A lot more women can pull off long hair, but very few can pull off short hair.

Thomas asks…

How does a woman stop attracting insecure, needy men?

Why are single men so needy and insecure? How does a woman stop attracting this type of man?

admin answers:

It’s tough because the more women become strong, proud, self-sufficient, and independent, the more men will be needy, clingy, and insecure, especially if she wants space, or always wants space.. Even the dark, mysterious, silent, strong, brooding women attract these types of men as well, same thing with logical, rational, and even unemotional women. Men will try to tie down independent, self-sufficient women. Another thing is, you can perhaps wear a wedding ring and show a desperate man that you’re married to another man.

Also, avoid chivalry from men you don’t know that much. Chivalry from strangers is dangerous, especially when an unfamiliar man holds the door open for you or offers to help you with things, for example. He might be a crazy, psychotic man.

Donald asks…

admin answers:

A lot of hairdressers are gay, and I had one once give me a pixie cut to rid me of my “damaged” hair. I felt like hiding for months. I think they just don’t care or want to impress themselves with their handiwork. Long, shiny hair is just pretty and feminine to a lot of men.

Your Questions About Attracting Women

Laura asks…

How do I stop attracting fat women?

I always attract the fat women. I know this is shallow of me but I find large women unattractive. I like slim women that know what they are doing with their life. Not the slutty ones. I know it’s not about looks. But every fat woman that has come to me is either needy or slutty. I find that unattractive. I think they should just wear jeans and not mini skirts. My friends say “it’s more plumpin’ for the humpin’” but that’s just not me.

admin answers:

You gave no background, but I’m guessing that somewhere in the past you screwed a large woman. You obviously don’t know this, but large women have a unique network they use which contains a database of men they have slept with. If you have banged a big chick, you are in this database for life. Other heffers can access this network and look you up in the database. Given that you probably nailed one, others will likely follow. I personally don’t see how your complaint has any merit. What you’re after is the vagina; essentially they all serve the same function so you shouldn’t concern yourself with the packaging around it.

Since you DO want to stop attracting large women, I think your only chance is to tell large women you’re gay. You may have to be refrain from any sexual activity to back up your claim, by that I mean if you meet a skinny woman you can’t nail her otherwise your lie will not work. If you work the gay angle long enough, chances are you could be taken out of the database and no longer be branded a chubby chaser.

Robert asks…

Will Italian/Spanish/French men always remain on top when it comes to attracting women?

Like in my experience if you tell a girl you are from Italy or Spain, it instantly gets her interested in you and it gets her attention in a heartbeat. I don’t think any other race/ethnicity/nationality can have the same effect on them. My question is this, will it always be that way?

Will things change in the future to the point where women like Hispanic, Asian, and Black men more than italian and spanish men?

admin answers:

Personally, I think europpean men are creepy LOL!! But then again, I’m a teen and maybe it’s also because I’m europpean myself :P Im more attracted to black guys.

Chris asks…

How much does Body Type affect your chances of attracting women?

Im a guy who’s over weight, but other than that i believe that i have few flaws. Im definitely not a bad looking person, and im really easy to get along with. People like me a lot and i am always told that im a great person and a good friend. So i guess i would like to know that since im over weight when girls meet me do they automatically put me into the “Friend” category rather than the “Potential Boyfriend” category?

admin answers:

I am sorry to say but alot of the time that is exactly what will happen. I’ve found myself doing its sometimes. Weight can play a really big role in attraction.

There are alot of really shallow girls out there.

But the ones that are worth your time are the ones who don’t care about your weight.

Steven asks…

Is confidence the key to attracting women?

I was really down on myself for a while and my life was a mess. I was having trouble getting a date. I kind of gave up and just focused on improving my life. I’ve had a lot of success lately and am feeling really good about myself – confident and in control.

Suddenly I’ve noticed lots of women sort of throwing themselves at me. Women I never thought I would be able to get. I am a nice guy so I’m not used to this attention, but I’m ready to try dating again. Is keeping up my confidence all I need? I’m honestly a little nervous.

admin answers:

It really is! Women love a man who is confident in himself. Aren’t you attracted to the women who are hot and know it? The key is not to be a cocky jerk. Do things like open doors, if there’s a problem with her meal, flag down the waiter and politely explain the issue. These show that you’re in control of the situation and don’t mind taking the lead, but they still focus on her needs. Confidently make it about her.

Lisa asks…

Do Butterfly Flowers & Bushes Attract Not only Butterflies, but Bees too?

I have heard that they Attract, Butterflies, Bees, Wasps, and possibly deer.

admin answers:

I have butterfly bushes – lots of butterflies and hummingbirds come to them. Don’t think they attract bees any more than other flowers do. Haven’t had any wasps and they’ve been in for 4 years. They are one plant that the deer around here have not attacked. In fact, I believe they are on the list of deer resistant plants – you can verify this by going to any of the horticultural sites – clemson university has a pretty good one.

Your Questions About Attracting Bats

How do I attract bats to my bat box?

I got a kit at Lowe’s Home Improvment Warehouse. Looking for advice b4 I put it up.

admin answers:

Bats are awesome. They eat an incredible amount of bugs, are harmless, and are great fun to watch at dusk when they start chowing down the bugs.

Kinda cute-ugly, in a Mick Jagger sorta way

Richard asks…

how hard would it be to attract bats to my backyard if i live in a small town?

i love near north dakota, in canada (manitoba)

admin answers:

You would need to have suitable habitat. If you live near a small pond or marshy area where there would be plenty of food, it may be possible to attract them.

Go to the Bat Conservation International Website; they have good information and resources on bats, and on bathouses, if you choose to try one, specific to your area

Contrary to what the previous poster indicated, they do NOT recommend mounting them in a tree. The house will be too shaded and won’t be accessible. BCI has location information for mounting bathouses.

Helen asks…

Bat house, what is the best way to attract bats to the house? i live in Northern VA, any help is appreciated!?

i appreciate those remarks, i already have the house, just need to figure out how to attract them now to it…does bat guano work?

admin answers:

ATT R AC T I N G B ATS – Bats have to find new roosts on their own. Existing evidence strongly suggests that lures or
attractants (including bat guano) will NOT attract bats to a bat house. Bats investigate new roosting opportunities
while foraging at night, and they are expert at detecting crevices, cracks, nooks and crannies that offer shelter from
the elements and predators. Bat houses installed on buildings or poles are easier for bats to locate, have greater
occupancy rates and are occupied two and a half times faster than those mounted on trees.
Unlike domestic animals, bats are wild and free-ranging. It is usually illegal to buy or sell them, and permits to
capture and possess bats are generally limited to researchers, zoos, wildlife rehabilitators and educational organizations.
Catching and relocating bats to new areas is, in any case, highly unlikely to succeed. Bats have strong homing
instincts, and once released into a bat house, will attempt to return to their former home area. Consequently,
placing bats in a bat house is usually futile and is not recommended. If a bat house remains unoccupied after two
full years, consider repositioning of modifying the house.
TE M PE R AT U R E S – Maintaining proper roost temperatures is probably the
single most important factor for a successful bat house. Interior temperatures
should be warm and as stable as possible (ideally 80º F to 100º F in
summer) for mother bats to raise their young. Some species, such as the big
brown bat, prefer temperatures below 95º F, while others, such as the little
brown bat, tolerate temperatures in excess of 100º F. Bachelor bats are less
picky and may use houses with cooler temperatures. The sides of wooden or
masonry structure are the best mounting sites, especially in colder climates,
because temperatures are more stable than for houses attached to poles.
Bat house temperatures are influenced directly by the exterior color,
compass orientation (east-, southeast-, or south-facing are generally good bets for single houses in most climates),
the amount of sun exposure, how well the house is caulked and vented, and the mounting and construction materials.
You may have to experiment to get the right placement and temperature range. You can always use a thermometer
taped to a pole to see if temperatures are suitable inside the bat house (check the chambers high and low,
and front and back).
The odds of attracting bats are very good for well-designed, well-built bat houses mounted according to recommendations
developed by the Bat House Project during 12 years of bat house research by BCI and its volunteer
Research Associates across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. Here are a few of our latest results:
•Bats inhabited an average of 60 percent of all reported bat houses (both good and bad houses and installations) in
BCI’s 1999 to 2001 annual surveys.
•Occupancy in rural areas was 61 percent, compared to 50 percent for urban and suburban areas.
•90 percent of occupied bat houses were used within two years (with 50 percent occupancy in the first year). The
rest needed three to five years for bats to move in.
•Tall designs like the multi-chamber (nursery) and rocket-style houses performed best in our surveys. For example,
80 percent of 123 houses with chambers at least 25 inches tall were occupied in 2000.

Your Questions About Attracting Women

Lizzie asks…

Why are narcissists successful at attracting women ?

I just want to know, why are they so successful, initially, at atracting women. what is it they do in their behaviour, thoughts, etc that is so attractive to women ?

admin answers:

Because of their safety, but after everything we realise that he doesn’t matter about “me/she” because he’s thinking about himself and that is absolutely awful. The narcissists can have a lot of women because they know how to play but they don’t know how to keep it.

Helen asks…

Why are narcissists successful, initially, at attracting women?

What is it that narcissists do that attracts women? How do they think, Behave around women, what do they say to women, and their attitudes and body language that is toxic at attracting women ? can you give some examples please.

admin answers:

Because they mold into that “perfect man” to the women they are targeting. It’s like a Lure fish in the deep sea with the light out in front of it attracting mates. When the mate sees the light it can’t help but go to it…only to be swallowed whole.

They don’t see women as a living being but as an object that will give them affection and the attention they need.

Jar of Hearts- by Christina Perry is a great example.
If you ever meet a narcissist…run.

Is it ok to have a tattoo of Obama’s face on my body due to it attracting women?

admin answers:

You should of put it on your johnson.. Imagine the reaction to that…

Jenny asks…

why do women get surprised, when the regular men bemoan about the difficulty in attracting women for casual?

affairs.

when women ADMIT that they have very high standards for mens looks when they are looking to have a bit of fun w/o commitments.
OOT & ABOOT
but you wont admit that the grievance of men is valid?
oot @ aboot
the ground reality is very different.
men are realistic about their expectations regarding casual sex options. go fcuking figure !

admin answers:

Women have casual sex with a very small group of men, over and over again. This group (maybe about 15% of all men) have so much sex that they never even worry about settling down. And that is okay with these girls, as they know that the men they screw are too attractive to commit. When it is time to commit, these women lower their physical standards (or as they rationalize it, they “mature” and look for traits other than physical attraction). Now they give nicer, more desperate men a chance (men that they were have rejected in the past), as they are far more likely to stick around. In fact, these poor souls are just happy to finally get positive female attention. If this nice guy gets jealous that his wife was a shallow whore in the past, he is simply being “immature”. Of course, only stupid men fall for this tripe. Women are shallow and driven by the same darwinian instincts that drive females of any species. Fact is, these losers are good enough to work for her intimacy, but not nearly attractive enough to get it for free like all them men in their pasts.

Another problem this posses is that average/ugly girls get inflated heads. They think that because a very attractive man f*cked and chucked them, suddenly they are “in that league”. In reality, most men would happily have casual sex with women they don’t consider worthy of a relationship. Since these girls get inflated heads, they go around rejecting men in their own league for years, wondering why all men are jerks (men who are too attractive to commit to them) or losers (average men).

“And I bet men actively look to give all the less atractive girls a nice night of pleasure when they are looking to get laid for the night?”
-YES men lower their physical standards for one night stands ALL OF THE TIME. Haven’t you even gone to a bar with male friends who want to hook up? They bang any mediocre looking girl who is willing to screw, despite how unbelievably hot their exes/next girlfriend could be. As long as the girl is not morbidly obese or repulsive (a small percent of women), it is fine.

Donald asks…

Is it possible for a man to be succesful in his career but unsucsssful in terms of attracting women?

I have a friend who is relatively succesful career wise, but has not gotten laid in like 5 years. On the other hand, I have a cousin who is a total bum—works a dead end job, and I think he lives at home at 35 years old, yet he always seems to have a pretty girlfriend. My question is, how common, is it for a man to be sucessful in his career but unscusseful with women or vice versa?

admin answers:

The guy with the successful career may be more timid about dating girls. His career probably comes first and the reason why its so successful. Not sure about the bum. I wouldn’t date someone who was a total bum like that. It’s not attractive.

Your Questions About Attracting Birds

Thomas asks…

How to attract birds to my suet feeder?

I just put up a suet feeder 1 week ago. I have 3 other seed feeders and the birds come all the time. But, I still haven’t seen one bird on my suet feeder the whole week, it hasn’t even been touched. I put it just 20 ft away from my other feeders on the same exact tree. Why haven’t they eaten off that feeder yet? Is there any way I can attract them to the suet feeder?

admin answers:

Joe you have to have suet feeding birds in the area before you can attract them. I haven’t the slightest idea of where you live. A lot of the suet feeders spend the summers farther north. When it becomes colder and food less abundant they move slightly south. When they find food they stay. A few of the suet feeders in the woodpecker family have started to move in around here. They come in just after the hummingbirds flee. The hummers are gone by Oct. 8. As they evacuate the area the others move down and replace them.

I haven’t seen my first Junco yet this year. I am setting up my Finch feeder and the Cardinal feeder. I put out a sparse suet feeder because I don’t want the fat to spoil in this heat. I’ll clean and refill it as needed.

If you really want a bunch of different kind of birds get a water heater for the bird bath. When all the other water is frozen they will flock to your bird bath. Gravel is hard to get when everything is covered with snow and ice. They need it to grind their food in their gizzards. Make sure you have some for them.

To get them to stay make your yard bird friendly. With cover. Have medium and small bushes for them to flee to. You already have a tree. I mound up a stick pile about 6ft x 4ft about 4ft high. Make sure they are loose so the birds can fly in and out. It gives them great cover and protection from cats and the snow.

In May, the wrens return and build their nest in the wood pile. I wait until the last batch is hatched and throw it in the shredder. As fall approaches I begin building a new stick pile for the coming seasons. The birds have to have access and a feeling of safety or they won’t come. Supply them with their needs and you may have to carry a stick out to get near the feeder so they don’t mob you.

Talk to some birders and they will tell you how to keep birds around all year.

Susan asks…

How can I attract rare species of birds to my garden?

I was reading a book about birds and I was shocked about how many common garden birds can be found in a garden in SE England.

So how can I attract birds such as Goldcrests to my garden?

I have a feeder and my garden has a lot of grass and therefore worms and bugs. I don’t however, have a pond, and unfortunately I don’t think I can get one.

So what are some other ways?

admin answers:

Two different web sites had this to say:

In Dunglass Dean there are woodcock and occasionally, tawny, barn, short- and long-eared owls; the young conifer plantations also attract goldcrest, redpoll and long-tailed tits.

some non-native species can enrich wildlife – the pines (mostly Black Pine – a species of southern Europe) around Park Campus attract Goldcrest and Coal Tit, two native bird species which probably would not otherwise occur here, and ground cover such as Cotoneaster can provide berries for native Thrushes. It is difficult to propose hard and fast rules concerning the benefits of native versus non-native species when it comes to planting, although where habitats have developed a high degree of naturalness (e.g., the shelterbelts) then native species ought to be given precedence.

So…. Could you plant a black pine or two in your yard? If your yard is too small… Do some gorilla gardening and plant some nearby in neglected properties.

Chris asks…

Will birds come to feeder on 11th floor balcony?

I’m trying to help a bird-loving friend who has recently had to move to high-rise apartment dwelling.
Does anyone have any tips for attracting birds to higher balcony feeders?

admin answers:

Richard asks…

How can I attract birds to live in my beard?

I have begun to grow a beard and I think it would be nice to have some birds nesting in it once it reaches its full potential. If possible, I would also like to train these birds to fly back and forth to my house and bring me dark chocolate M&Ms.

How can I attract them?

admin answers:

I think a tall, Abe Lincoln-style hat would be a wonderful training tool for the birds, and as a bonus, will accent your new beard quite nicely. A couple of well-placed holes in the hat will encourage the birds to nest inside. Once they are comfortable, you can sprinkle a bit of birdseed in your moustache, and they will begin to rest and nest in your beard.

Once they know of your intense love for Dark Chocolate M&Ms, they will be more than happy to bring them to you. Since they will be right underneath your mouth, I assume the more doting birds may even feed the M&Ms to you.

I will do my part by hanging bird feeders shaped like your bearded head around my home. In time, the birds will flock to you out of instinct.
:)

George asks…

What specific type of food can I buy to attract birds to my balcony so I can photograph them?

I am wondering if there is certain type or brand of bird food that is better to attract birds to my balcony. In case location is important to know, I am in Charlotte, NC.
Thanks for your answers.

admin answers:

First you need to find out what kinds of birds there are in your area. If you are looking to attract certain species, make certain they are in your area. Certain birds migrate and others do not. A good mixture of songbird food will attract most birds, and you can find this readily in Wal Mart or any other store that carries grain. (Farm and garden stores). Some birds like cardinals and orioles love oranges and other fruit, as well as sunflower seed. Finches love thistle seed. And cracked corn is always a good filler. Most larger birds will go for this. We feed the birds, and I have all kinds that come to the yard. I use a songbird mixture, and black sunflower seed. That keeps just about everyone happy. I put out oranges, pears and apples for my cardinals and jays and larger birds, and as soon as I see the orioles, always oranges. Also, pieces of bread with peanut butter. If you have hummingbirds in your area, hang a feeder near a window, and make your own nectar–1/4 C sugar to 1 C. Water. Bring this mixture to a rolling boil for about 3 minutes. Cool and stir in some food coloring, and you will have a showstopper. Hummies are very active, and love their nectar–the sweeter the better. I always add a little extra sugar. Have fun!

Your Questions About Attracting Hummingbirds

Linda asks…

What can I do to attract Hummingbirds to our house?

I put feeders out for them months ago and they’re still full. I haven’t seen a single Hummingbird at them. Should I move the feeders? Is there something else I can do to attract them?

admin answers:

If your feeders have been outside for months, the nectar inside is no longer good. The website listed below has a good recipe for making your own nectar for the feeders. Most feeders have red ON the feeder. If you bought one that doesn’t, just tie a red ribbon on the feeder. DO NOT use pre-packaged nectar with red dye in it, or add red dye – some bird experts say it’s harmful, some say they aren’t sure, so to be safe – just don’t use it.

1) Make sure the feeder is clean
2) NO RED DYE
3) Clean feeder and replace nectar at least once a week
4) Only fill half full until you have birds coming, so you don’t waste food in between cleanings
5) The more attractive flowers you have in your yard, the more birds you will ATTRACT, but the LESS they will take from your feeder. Hummingbirds always prefer natural nectar from plants over a feeder.

Good luck. Take good care of your feeder, don’t let the nectar go sour, you’ll have hummingbirds before long.

James asks…

In West Texas can you attract hummingbirds?

If you can, how do you attract them? What feeder or what food hummingbirds like? Are there certain plants that attract hummingbirds?

admin answers:

All red flowers attract Hummingbirds. Here, we use plants AND feeders…use feeders with red “flower” parts …mix 1 cup sugar to 1 1/2 cup water. Change every week, otherwise, mold grows and hummingbirds will not touch it. Do NOT add red food dye to water…not necessary. If you hang the feeder, apply vaseline to wire to prevent ants from invading.
My yard is filled with the fiesty birds, they nest here, we have 4 young ones just out of nests, learning to hover and fly about. Neat to watch. Hummingbirds usually lay a clutch of 2 per tiny nest, eggs look like capsules.

Michael asks…

How can I attract hummingbirds?

My sons bought me a hummingbird feeder for Mother’s Day and so far I have not had a single hummingbird. Is there something I can do to attract them? Also, I am gone during the day and do not get home until 5:30-6:00 are they more likely to feed earlier in the day or does the time not matter?
I placed the feeder on a shepard’s hook in a flower bed where we have columbines already planted.

admin answers:

You need to give them time, they’ll find it, but sometimes it takes a couple of weeks.

John asks…

Can you use store bought nectar to attract hummingbirds in any state, say, Ohio?

If you live in the midwest, can you attract hummingbirds to your front porch in any neighborhood? I live in the city, but there are a lot of trees. I saw this cool red nectar in a department store, do I have to live in a certain neighborhood to get these unique birds to my porch? How will they know to show up? Can they smell it from miles away like sharks to human blood? Can they get signals from other birds. Has anyone ever attracted hummingbirds to their porch, and what state do you live in?

The hummingbirds are attracted to the area by the flowers there, not the hummingbird feeders. If you live in the city, I doubt if you can get them around a feeder. If you have any flowers around, just mix sugar 1part to 4 parts of water and heat to almost boiling to keep it from spoiling, let cool and put in a feeder and hang out of direct sunlight around some trees or flowers, they will find it. The storebought nectar doesn’t do anything except cost a lot., I live in NE Texas on a lake…..Nuf Said

Susan asks…

What kind of plants/flowers attract hummingbirds?

I want lots of hummingbirds in my garden…I mean a LOT. I want hummingbirds up the a-ss man…a lot…yeeaah…awesome.

admin answers:

Red flowers seem to attract the little creeps. You can have all mine, I’m terrified of the bastards. They fly up behind me, make that giant hornet sound and when I jump up the threaten to pull out my eyes. I think they know this and torment me everyday. They seem to be having fun. Flowers are the key, feeders will help a lot.

Your Questions About Attracting Money

Ken asks…

Why some women are attracted to nothing but money?

Some days ago I saw a question about a fourty something years old man, who could seduce young women easily because he has a lot of money. I know that not every woman is like that, but you have to admit that many women are like that. In my opinion that is very shallow for both sides, and I particularly wouldn’t like a girl like that, even if I had a lot of money. But I wanted to know why are women nowadays more attracted to money and power than love and affection?

admin answers:

One will find that both men and women can be attracted by things other than love, affection and real friendship.

I am hardly a young woman, but I am very attractive for my age.Your question brought to recollection the time when a man who was trying to pick me up, told me that he had a lot of money. My response was as follows:

“I am not interested in your money. It means nothing to me and I am earning a very good living, by virtue of my expertise and skill as a technician.”

I could not care less, whether a man is “rich”.

How To Attract Really Wild And Dangerous Birds?

me and my sister loves animals and mostly birds and im wondering how to attract like hawks owls vultures those birds that can kill you im not scared of any kind of bird like that my sister saw a vulture and it was right next to her :) sooo we wanna just attract animals like that ohh and we really wanna see a deer please tell me how to attract deers too :) ) i love deers
Im 9… and for real im not kidding

admin answers:

Either you are not an American or you are too young to be using Yahoo!Answers. Your misuse of the American language is very sad, as is your misinformation about ‘dangerous birds.’

Birds do not kill people and there is no way to attract hawks or owls to a specific area or place. If you want to attract vultures, just leave dead deer carcasses laying around and let them decompose. That is what vultures eat, not people.

Betty asks…

Attracting Rats?

I know how people like to get ride of rats, but how do you attract them. Don’t tell me I don’t want to attract them because I’ve already had them once before and they were kind of cool because every night there would be a whole bunch of owls in my backyard trying to catch the rats.

admin answers:

When rats, mice, or any small animal comes into your home it’s for the same reason that you go home; they are seeking shelter, food and/or water. Usually there is a spike in rodent entry into a home during the colder winter months, but if truth be told, a foraging animal can come in any time of year.
, you can have a load of unexpected guests running around in no time.

Food Habits
Generally speaking, house mice eat many different types of food, though they prefer foods high in fat, protein or sugar, such as bacon, chocolate, candies, butter, and nutmeats. In the absence of these food types, their next preferred foods are seeds and grain, however they are not hesitant to sample new foods. A single mouse eats only about 3 grams of food per day (8 pounds per year) but because of their habit of nibbling on many foods and discarding partially eaten items, mice destroy considerably more food than they consume. Unlike Norway and roof rats, they can get by with little or no free water, although they readily drink water when it is available. They obtain their water needs from the food they eat. An absence of liquid water or food of adequate moisture content in their environment may reduce their breeding potential.

Is there an inexpensive non-harmful way to get rid of pigeons?

My mother and her neighbor have been inundated with pigeons! They’ve tried chicken wire AND a fake owl. Nothing seems to work! They just move to a different area of the roof and fly back and forth between the houses. Pest control is stating that it will be no less that 450 dollars to get rid of the pigeons. There are between 6-20 pigeons at any given time. Is there any safe way to be rid of them? There are many laws here prohibiting harm to wildlife. We tried calling the fish and game and regional wildlife reserve and we were told that we must have done something to attract them there. My mother and her neighbor have done absolutely nothing to attract these pests! They just showed up and seem to be attracting more and more pigeons! PLEASE help!

admin answers:

Have the birds been able to get into the attic or into some other sheltered area for nesting. They like to roost in a covered location like lofts, steeples, vents, and under eaves. They shelter like this to avoid owls and falcons that hunt pigeons on wing from overhead. If you can find where they are roosting at night you can put wire mesh up blocking access until they leave. Or drape an area with bird netting whatever seems easiest to block the birds.
To get them off the roof is harder. If they nest elswhere but come in they must be foraging for food nearby. Try using Bird Proof to repel them. Meanwhile see if you can find where they are foraging for grain or seeds. Removing their food source will drive them away also.

James asks…

Is known that cats and dogs can drink antifreeze but what about birds?

I work in a garage in a very rural area (near a big forest) and there are not cats or dogs but plenty of birds (including wild birds, red-kites, owls, magpies, etc).
Since we have plenty of antifreeze around and cars often leak it I’m worried if birds could be attracted by antifreeze and drink it like pets.

admin answers:

Yes it is highly toxic to birds, but I doubt if they would take it like cats or dogs, which are attracted to it by the smell and will lap it up, leakage from cars unless it were to gather in pools a bird would not drink it.

But it should always put into a container and never washed down the drains as then it could get into a water course where birds could drink it along with other animals

Your Questions About Attracting Dragonflies

Helen asks…

How do I build a water garden for wildlife (not a pond) just a damp area with ferns etc to attract dragonflies

I would like the area to be attractive and peaceful to myself other people and also to wildlife in general. The area I have in mind already has ferns, arum lillies and iris. I have a vision of pebbles and just a little water but not with fountains or waterfalls. Something that is cost conscious would be great! The area is about 2m x 3m with the plants mentioned already positioned around the edge. Any ideas anyone how to tackle this?

Thanks for any help offered.

admin answers:

What you are thinking of is a bog garden. I’ve built a few of them and they are easy and inexpensive to do. They are usually built using flexible pond liner to keep the area flooded.

Rather than go into detail here, I’d suggest going to this forum….

Very helpful people here, willing to share experience.

PS – they also attract mosquitoes, keep that in mind.

Sandy asks…

What kind of bait could be used to attract insects?

I have to collect insects for school, and, especially dragonflies are hard to catch, even though there’s a ton of them around. Is there anything in the house, maybe sugar or something that will attract stuff like dragonflies, wasps, butterflies, etc?

If this is in the wrong section, I apologize. I never have had to ask something like this.

admin answers:

Insects eat different things research the food for each type. If you use a plastic bottle with the top cut off and inverted into it, you can make a trap. For yellowjackets, some raw meat in the bottle will attract them. You will need to be able to kill the insects maybe a spray. A banana peel should get fruit flies, sugar or syrup will get you houseflies. Dragonflies are predators, they eat waterborne insects do some research. Good luck.

Jenny asks…

How Can I Attract Beneficial Insects Into My Garden…?

Would like to get more wildlife into my garden including insects that are helpful such as ladybirds, bees and dragonflies. What are the best ways of attracting them into my garden?

Thanks

admin answers:

A log pile in a quiet corner is a brilliant idea. Just leave it alone and insects and things like frogs and toads will live there.
Also don’t tidy up to a certain extent. Dried grasses and seed heads left over the winter act as a shelter to insects and provide food for birds.
Put food out for the birds in the winter and spring.
Also a bird bath will get them flocking in.
Dragonflies need a pond or similar to lay eggs and for their larvae to develop. They also need reeds or similar to the larvae to climb out of the water.

Donald asks…

Butterflies & Dragonflies?

Is it possible to keep Butterflies as pets? And I live in the North in the U.S. and its winter now, so how would I keep them alive?
Also, how do I attract other types of butterflies & dragonflies to my garden, I usually get Monarchs and little yellow and white ones, and the occasional “Zebra” butterflies.

admin answers:

Butterflies are generally very difficult to keep as pets. While they thrive during the warmer spring and summer they are difficult to get through their entire lifecycle. A zoo near where I lived kept trying for several years before stopping. Many people are content with keeping a few hardy species for a few months each year. Dragonflies need water and vegetation while butterflies are specifically attracted to certain plants. Butterflies especially like glucose water. I suggest researching what foods your butterflies like and planting those plants.

dragonflies everywhere??? help!?

i just walked out my front door and there are about 50 dragonflies swooping and dive bombing my front yard! I’ve never seen anything like this before. does anyone know what this about? there were other bugs flying around out there too-are they eating them??? i looked all around and they are only in front of my house??! and no I don’t have piles of garbage on my front lawn attracting them….lol…any info appreciated!

They are feeding on gnats or other insects emerging from the grass..garbage has nothing to do with them, they are just helping you out.

There eggs are laid in water, not grass or soil
