Your Questions About Attracting Birds

Carol asks…

Problem attracting birds?

I live in the greater San Diego area on an acre of land in the suburbs. There is lots of grass on my land and an orange grove. Recently I hung a bird feeder from my patio and also put out a birdbath in the same general area. As far as I can tell, no birds have eaten or bathed. (I know there are lots of birds in the area.) Is this because it’s summer? Or is the feeder too close to windows, humans, other birds‘ nests? Any suggestions?

admin answers:

Try a few other locations. An open area, with nothing over the feeder. Maybe spread some bird food on the ground. Keep the pets away, especially cats. There are periods when birds do not visited feeders frequently. When raising young. Make sure the bird food is not contaminated with fungus or bacteria.

It would help if you could identify birds in your area. That way you could find out their food preferences. Check with neighbors that feed birds or check with a local bird watching club or Audubon.

Mark asks…

How can i attract birds to nest in our area?

I`ve tried putting seed out, but they never make a nest anywhere. We have some small trees in the front, which NO bird dares to nest in for some strange reason. It seems as if we are cursed or something.

We do have a cat and two dogs.

How can i attract them, besides giving them birdseed?

admin answers:

Birds in a backyard is an enjoyable experience for many. Children love to get involved in naming the different birds and birdwatching is a serious hobby for many people. For those who would like to attract more birds to a yard or garden, here are some great tips.

Step 1-The easiest thing to do to attract birds is to affix a bird feeder somewhere in the yard, patio or garden so they may eat. Different birds like different things: a hummingbird needs special sugar syrup in a liquid, goldfinches like thistleseed, starlings and nuthatches enjoy peanuts (raw, never salted), bluejays like sunflower seeds and sparrows like millet.

Step 2-Another easy way to attract birds is to plant a few favorite flowers of the birds. Hummingbirds enjoy red flowers, and those that produce nectar. Obvious choices are hibiscus and honeysuckle.

Step 3-Birds also enjoy fruits. Fresh or dried fruits can be used. Orioles, Mockingbirds and Western Tanagers like apples or oranges.

Step 4-Adding a bird bath to a garden or yard with no pond will also encourage birds to stop by. Birds are especially attracted to running water so a little fountain bubbling softly will be nice for them. Use recycling pumped water so that water is not wasted.

Step 5-Birdhouses or nestboxes are another way to encourage birds ‘spend the night’ at your house.

Ken asks…

how can i attract birds to my yard?

I have no lawned area, have put bird food, including fat balls around but as there is limited room and there is as yet no hedges or foliage, what plants can I put in baskets etc to attract them?

admin answers:

It is best to have bird food in the garden 12 months of the year, and they will notice it, even when not needed, such as when there is an abundance of wild food out there.

If you have fences, you could attach feeders to these. The main bird feed used in my garden are fat balls (disappearing at the rate of 1 a day at present, due to the newborn), sunflower seeds, eaten by tons of birds, and mixed seed feeds.

For tub growing, I’d go for a range of plants, some evergreen and some deciduous. This will provide shelter and cover, as well as somewhere to sit and rest. Look for a hardy Hibiscus plant, a shrub that is deciduous, and flowers for your benefit during the summer too. Find a slower growing conifer, otherwise they’ll want to be huge trees in next to no time, and this will provide some evergreen cover. Honeysuckle would be great in a tub, this produces berries for autumn/wionter feeding, as well as sweetly scented flowers during summer. Pyracantha is a wall shrub, meaning it can be grown to cover a wall – these have flowers and berries for winter feeding – loved by blackbirds etc. Blackbirds also love apples, so you could include a small apple tree, or just feed them some occasional apples – I cut the tops off them, and then they peck away at the inside.

Here are some links to photos and info:

Conifer – http://www.conifer.com.au/objectlibrary/1450
Dwarf apple – http://www.gardens4you.co.uk/index.php?/Patio/Dwarf-Growing-Apple-Red-Spur.html

Style your garden to suit your tastes, and incorporate something for the birds that you’d like. I’m not sure if you just would like more birds, or to attract specific ones, as some of them have special tastes – eg. Goldfinch birds love Nyger seeds (I placed this into my garden and after a couple of months, Goldfinches miraculously appeared!) Just beware of really fast growing conifers, which could take all of your light. I’m not sure where you live, so I’ve included plants that can be grown pretty much everywhere.

Finally, give them water too, to bathe in and to drink, which they may need after eating seeds. If you have a safe spot for a nesting box, put this up as soon as possible, as the birds will know where it is, long before nesting time, in preparation for use.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

Ruth asks…

How do I attract birds … not sexually, but, you know … ?

I’ve become a bird watcher recently … sign of my age, I guess lol … and I was wondering what is the best way to attract the widest variety of birds to my bedroom … uh, i mean, my backyard. Like, what kind of bird feed should I buy? I have thrown out cracked corn, but it seems to only attract one or two different species. I live in northeast Georgia, USA. Thank you..

admin answers:

In addition to various mixes of wild bird seed and black sunflower seed, you can offer nectar for hummingbirds, and grape jelly for orioles (you can get jelly feeders at any wild bird store) Suet will attract woodpeckers, nuts and pinecones rolled in peanut butter will bring in chickadees and blue jays. You can also take apples and oranges and cut them in half and peg them on tree branches (or on wooden dowels attached to a flat board hung on a tree) for catbirds and other fruit eaters. You can offer mealworms for insectivores as well.

Vary your feeders – some birds are ground feeders and will not eat at a hanging feeder; other birds prefer something about 3-4 feet off the ground.

If you want to keep squirrels out of your birdseed, get exclusionary feeders. Some work on weight – when a squirrel or large bird gets on the feeder, the openings for the feed close and the animal can not get to the seed – and some of them work on size – the feeder is encased in a wire cage, and the openings are too small for a squirrel or large bird to get through, but the small birds fit through the wire and can eat.

Don’t forget a birdbath – you will attract as many birds by providing water for drinking and bathing as you will attract with food.

Also, if your yard is big enough to place some nesting boxes away from the feeding area, you may get some birds to raise their families there. Just never place the nesting boxes close to the food, as the food attracts predators that could invade the nest boxes and destroy the eggs or eat the babies.

Steven asks…

what can i do to attract birds to my yard?

i love birdwatching. i want to attract blue jays, but any other birds are okay.

admin answers:

Go to your local pet or feed store, buy a bird seed mix. They love the sunflower seeds best (get the bird ones, the roasted and salted human ones aren’t good for the birds). Just put this out and the birds will come. I started doing this on my deck so the cat would have something entertaining to watch through the windows while I was at work…and after a few weeks had literally hundreds of birds a day come by in the mornings and evenings for seeds. Then the cat (who sometimes would sit outside and watch them) figured out how to catch the birds and I had to stop.

Try to feed them in a way they aren’t vulnerable to predators and cats (I thought I had this figured out but my cat must be smarter than me). Once a couple birds find your seeds, others will see them and it will become a zoolike endeavor. I’ve been feeding a bit lately in a more protected spot and have about a dozen species that come in for food, it’s very fun to watch!

Your Questions About Attracting Women

David asks…

Need some advice on how to be different than most guys when it comes to attracting women?

I know one of them is not giving them that much attention because let’s face it a lot of guys drool over a knock out gorgeous women. But what else can i do to be different and get there attention?

admin answers:

“I want to be different” – That’s where most of the guys dont understand that a girl does not want something out of ordinary…..she just expects you to be yourself and most of the guys try to act more charming and caring, etc which, trust me, gets them nowhere……….. So be yourself and that will really help you…good luck!!

Ken asks…

why do political parties have a difficult time attracting women to politics?

Please guys, serious answers here please. I know there are women in politics, but not nearly as much as men. Why?

admin answers:

Well Republicans for one don’t exactly have a history of supporting causes that women might have an interest in, like abortion rights, birth control, and equal wages.

Besides, many of the women in politics nowadays, like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann, are an embarrassment to women.

James asks…

What do you think is the most important thing in attracting women?

I’m talking from a first impressions point of view. Let’s say they have not spoke to you properly what do you think are the factors. I mean could a girl want you without talking to you first or would you have to be dressed like a celeb?

From what I see girls don’t look at me while I’m at work(working with public) because of my job, even though I’m very good looking.

admin answers:

Lot’s of £50 notes.

Richard asks…

Most guys who I have known to be very successful in attracting women used thier “Smile” to the fullest?

advantage and spent very little or no money in buying gifts, flowers, resturants, etc which was also appreciated by their women. I would love to hear from you if you have had similar experiences.

admin answers:

Yes, a smile catches a womens eye and make her wonder about you!

Laura asks…

Why is attracting women so much work ?

Seriously I’m 21 in college and attracting women is so hard I don’t even try to communicate with women it’s to hard and a waste of my time plus women are backstabbers (I’m not gay BTW) I just can’t trust women (oh and i’ma lightskinned black male who isn’t attracted to darksinned women)

admin answers:

Because it is a skill required to be happy in life, and who said living would be easy, if it was, then life would be boring since there is no challenge and no consequences. So just be happy you have a normal life.

Your Questions About Attracting Owls

James asks…

How should I attract owls?

I know there are many owls in my neighborhood but I have yet to see one. I want to have an up close encounter with an owl, but I don’t want to harm it or trap it. I was thinking of getting a mouse and putting it an an open box and hoping for an owl to swoop down and grab it. Would this work? I know I’d have to go at night or evening. Would putting a light over the mouse attract the owl as well? I feel like there might be the possibility as the owl seeing it as an unfamiliar object and loose interest. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

admin answers:

The box would have to large and flat for the owl to see it and it wouldn’t need to be lit. A light might discourage the owls .There’s the possibility that the owl might hear it though in box and find it. Guys that trap owls to band, put mice in hardware cloth cages with nylon snares. You could do that without the snares. If you want to have some fun, Take your cage with mouse inside and go road hunting for hawks etc and drop the cage off when you see a bird and get out of the way. Snowy Owls are real suckers. They will zoom right in on it. Google Image:> “bal chatri traps” to see all the different rigs.

Robert asks…

How to attract owls to my backyard?

I love owls sooo much. I live in Frankfort, Illinois so im not sure how too. I have a closed in fenced yard because of my neighbors. There is 2 pit bulls in back of me and a really annoying Golden Retriever that lives outside and barks at anything that moves. I have a couple of large trees. There is a lot or rabbits andsquirrelss in my yard also and sometimes mice. I cant afford to buy an owl nesting box or im not sure I could ever make one. A couple of nights ago I heard a couple of hoots in my yard but couldn’t tell where and that’s the first time I ever heard them as long as I have lived there (3 years) Im not sure if they are going to stay or not. My friends house a couple of blocks away always have owls there, because she lives right behind a prairie. Im wondering if I can attract them in any way. Thanks and please help me.

admin answers:

Buy some mice and let them loose. Just make sure they have good milkshakes.

Susan asks…

Will this successfully attract an owl?

This is my plan to attract an owl and get it close up.

Get two live mice and put them in two separate cages. Place the cages a roughly 30-50 ft apart. Sit back for approximately 1 hour and wait for an hour to descend down to examine the cages. I will be sitting back a good distance and be observing with binoculars. Do you think this will successively attract an owl in 1 hour? In terms of location, where would be the best place to do this? This would also be at around evening’s time by the way.

admin answers:

The cages will prevent the owl from seeing and hearing the prey. I doubt it will happen. Your best chances will be to locate a field and sit in a hidden place and watch to see if any owls hunt there at night. You might try to locate a farmer who has barn owls on his property.

Michael asks…

Can hummingbirds see the color blue?

I’ve been told that owls are one of the only birds that can see the color blue, but I have a bright blue hat that always attracts hummingbirds. They follow me around when I have the hat on. My hummingbird feeder at home is deep red and they seem to like that too.

admin answers:

Hummingbirds can see wavelengths into the near-ultraviolet, so yes they can see the color blue.

Hope this helped! :)

Linda asks…

Screech owl nesting box?

I have screech owls in my yard, and love to watch them at night. I want to attract more using a nesting box, but don’t want to infinge on the owls I have. Will putting up a nesting box scare the owls I have now away? Will the owls I have now move into it? Or, will more owls be attracted? Pretty much, would this be a wast of time?

admin answers:

The minimum territory size I can find seems to be 14 acres, so I doubt you could get more than one nesting pair in your yard. It isn’t clear to me whether or not they are nesting in a box/tree in your yard, or just hanging out. If there isn’t a box in your yard yet, you might be able to get them to move in, but you’re not going to get 2 pairs.

Here’s a fun fact I found while looking this up:

A 4-kg domestic chicken is the largest known prey item!

Your Questions About Attracting Hummingbirds

Susan asks…

Hummingbirds – How many ounces of nectar does one drink in a day?

I put up a feeder and it really attracted hummingbirds. Its gone thru 12 ounces in 4 days. Is that normal? It is not leaking and I see birds on it very often. Thanks

admin answers:

Essentially, one liquid ounce consumed per day suggests nearly 6 hummingbird equivalents are feeding at the feeder per day. Extrapolate that further and you’ll note that one gallon of sugar water consumed per day suggests about 750 hummingbirds are feeding per day.

Steven asks…

How do I attract hummingbirds and butterflies to my garden without spending a fortune?

Like any homemade ideas are great!

admin answers:

Plant the things they like. Butterflies love zinnias and they are very easy to grow and inexpensive. Hummingbirds like trumpet shaped flowers like moonflowers, scarlet runner beans, and trumpet vines.

James asks…

What are good perchs to get to attract Hummingbirds?

We’ve got a feeder and they come like crazy to get some. We’d also like to get a couple of perches for them to sit on. We’d also like to get some nesting boxes for them to breed in (we think that it would be a very fun thing to watch)

What are the best kind of perches , boxes, and other things that atract Hummerbirds?

admin answers:

Feeders and flowers are the best thing to attract them, and of course trees for perching. Hummingbirds are not cavity nesters so will not use a nesting box. They nest in trees and scrubs. They make very tiny nests that can be hard to spot.

Linda asks…

How do I attract hummingbirds to my feeder?

It’s hanging in the shade & is red, but nothing else around it is red & no flowers or bushes are near it. Please advise…

admin answers:

You need to use Sugar Water homemade mix. 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water. My feeders are not near anything red and the birds are draining them daily

Chris asks…

If I want to attract hummingbirds for the season, how soon should I put out my feeders?

I live in Kansas. We’ll have days that get up to 70, but they’re one at a time right now and will be followed by 50s or 40s.

Your Questions About Attracting Dragonflies

Richard asks…

Which of the following is not an example of sexual selection?

1)Female widowbirds tend to choose as mates those males with the longest tails.
2)Male dragonflies frequently drown each other for territory and access to female mates.
3)The mating call of a male frog attracts a predator, which then proceeds to eat the frog.
4)During the breeding season, male musk-oxen engage in skull-crashing combat to compete for females. Such combat results in death about 10% of the time.
5)Female water frogs tend to be attracted to the males with the loudest and most distinctive mating calls.

admin answers:

3) The mating call of a male frog attracts a predator, which then proceeds to eat the frog.
The predator is not a mate. Arguably, this could be considered negative sexual selection, the trade-off to finding a mate.

The alternate answer would be 2, but not specifying the traits which allow one male to have the advantage in drowning a competitor doesn’t really disqualify it.

Chris asks…

There is a dragonfly in my ROOM? What attracted it?

For the past 6 hours a dragonfly has been hanging itself motionlessly on my ceiling lights. I turned the lights off and came back a few hours later to find it still there..

I live 12 floors up. What could have attracted this dragonfly? Seeing as to how they’re always at ponds and open fields.. my room is nothing like that. It’s small, and has no water whatsoever. The only hazard is the stacks of old exam/revision papers i neglected to dispose.

I don’t mind it staying there, but it’s quite disturbing to have it fly around in my sleep.. (The sounds it makes when it hits the walls makes my hair stand.) And i also think it.. defeaceated on my bed. There are tiny pellets directly underneath where the dragonfly is, its just very disturbing….

Leaving My Mark
Blue and maize: these are the colors that come to mind when I think of college. As a Michigan native, I have always grown up hearing how grand the University of Michigan is, but not until I started researching colleges did I realize how great the university really is. With its vast range of courses and advanced technology, the University of Michigan has been ranked 15th best in the world.
At the University of Michigan I hope to attend the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for a concentration in biology. This college offers a wide variety of courses that I can take outside of my field of study. As a Biologist, writing and communication skills are extremely important. At this college I would not only be able to take science and biology courses, I would also have the opportunity to take advanced writing and literature classes as well. I feel it is very important for a biology student to have numerous research opportunities but a surprising amount of colleges think differently. At the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts research is a must. There is such a substantial amount of research going on that it would almost be impossible to choose what and what not to get involved in. With U of M’s extensive student body it can sometimes be overwhelming. At the colleges, however, there are smaller communities where students can get to know one another, and with a smaller student body it is easier to stay focused on your studies. The concentration program in biology would enable me to have a specialized schedule of classes to meet my needs as a biology student. The concentration program would prepare me for graduate study in biology.
It is my dream to turn my childhood passion into a fulfilling career. As long as I can remember I have been interested in anything and everything that was alive, form dogs to dragonflies. As a child I collected bugs and insects as a hobby. I would pin them to a corkboard and then spend hours upon hours reading books to find out what kind of bugs they were. I have always been fascinated with the concept of life and how organisms worked; how they ate, how they adapted to their environments, or how long they lived and why, it has ceaselessly peaked my interest.
As a biologist I hope to study animals and wildlife. To become a biologist one must express curiosity, discipline, patience, and persistence. Data can be hard and frustrating to acquire, and studies could take years to conduct. Biologists can impact the world with their studies and I hope to someday leave my mark.

Your Questions About Attracting Men

Helen asks…

Do women consider their looks and sexuality their greatest asset towards attracting men?

admin answers:

For initial attraction yes because men are visual. After the first couple of dates, no, I do not think looks are the best asset for keeping his attentions. Brains and personality are more important at this stage in a relationship.

John asks…

Satgitarius horoscope: How is it in terms of attracting men and sex appeal?

admin answers:

Your horoscope: Today you will learn that stars are burning balls of gas and dust being drug through the cosmos at random by various forces. You will accept that there is no rational basis to assume that their positioning has any sway in your life. You will accept full responsibility for the direction your life takes, and will stop falling victim to charlatans and idiotic superstition.

Ken asks…

What’s the most basic of all when it comes to attracting Men?

What’s the most basic thing that women usually overlooked which drive men crazy??

admin answers:

Men are almost always attracted to a young fresh-smelling, pert-walking girl, with a sexy figure – long shapely legs, moderate firm boobs, and goodlooking…with a cheeky flirty way with her.
Yes, we men are that shallow!
But it`s true.

what do aries men find attracting in a leo woman?

what do they like about leo woman ? what attracts them the most ? i heard that a aries and a leo have great sex is that true ?oppionions on this match?

admin answers:

We dont know. Like most things, we just ARE attracted.
After a few dates or smth we realise a Leo woman speaks up for herself and her peers, she’s not afraid to tell it how it is…
We deeply admire, respect and NEED that, as Aries men. Cause allthough we’re all action and honesty and we’re bold, and afraid of no one, we lack the ability to speak our mind with complex detail and precision, and incisive, convincing tact like Leo does (especially women)…

David asks…

13 Year old finding OLDER men attracting?

My little sister is 13, and has just gone through puberty. She tells me this, and It kind of scares me a little?

She’s 13, and finds men in their 40s-50s attracting, and even physically. Yes, she sometimes ‘fantasizes’ I know this because, we’re extremely close to each other. I can’t tell my parents this. Is this normal?
Lol, no, I’m 17. I’m worried about her, and I’m debating if I should tell my mother or not.

admin answers:

Okay. I’m seeing a lot of people really freaking out here and I think that’s unnecessary so I’m going to throw my 2 cents in.
Whether or not this is a serious issue really depends on what your sister means when she says she finds older men attractive. When I was 15, I thought men in their 40s were more attractive because I was totally turned off by pimply, baby-faced, immature teenage boys who didn’t really seem all that masculine to me (sorry boys, I know it’s cruel but it’s also true). It’s not that I wanted to date them or anything, I just found them more attractive. And that’s the important distinction to make here. There’s a pretty big difference between finding someone attractive/fantasizing about them and actually becoming involved with them.
So I would say if your sister is just finding older men attractive but has the maturity/common sense not to be trying to become involved with them, this is totally normal and not something to be terribly worried about. Freaking out over it will just blow it way out of porportion. I would ask your sister if she would date an older man at the age she is now, and also observe how she interacts with older men-if she’s actively putting herslf out there, she’s definitely at risk of being exploited.
Basically what I’m saying is that until she’s acting on the attraction in a way that will really put her at risk, it’s not something you should be terribly worried about. I think the best thing to do is take a ‘watch and wait’ approach unless she is actively putting herself in harm’s way.

Attracting Birds to the fat balls?

Hello.

I am trying to attract birds onto the fat balls because I would love to take a picture of one sitting on the metal cage eating some.

I have set up my camera and tripod in my convorserty, because i have set it up inside i needed to more the bird table etc closer to the house.

No birds are coming and im wondering is there anything i could do to the fat balls or put something on them to get a bird to fly onto them.

Normally I would come back when lots of birds are on them, but today is my only day off so i really need to take a photo today.

Thank you

admin answers:

Scatter some bits of food on the floor around the fat ball feeders.
Some birds are ground feeders – blackbirds for example. If they come flying in for food it will attract the attention of the small birds like blue tits which come to hanging feeders.
If you want a good selection of wildlife you need a variety of foods and ideally to keep food in the garden for them all year. They will repay you by hanging around and eating all the insects like aphids and caterpillers which are intent on killing your soft plants, and once they know there is a food bar, will return time and time again.
Don’t forget water in cold weather. Many birds die because they have nothing to drink. A bird bath which you thaw every day will be very welcome for drinking and keeping their feathers in time to protect them during the cold nights.

Do you try to attract birds and butterflies to your garden?

Are there features like a fountain or pond in your yard? Native flowers? Butterfly host plants?

I live near open space so I’m thrilled to have both birds and butterflies in my yard and am always looking for ways to attract more species.

admin answers:

Invasive plant removal, native plant restoration

Well my grandpa puts out bird food. He sprinkles a cup of it on the patio and the birds swarm like crazy. And every once and a while he will throw out a ripped up bagle or bread. They like cereal too.

Your Questions About Attracting Hummingbirds

Sandy asks…

What’s a good flower to attract hummingbirds?

Mom loves hummingbirds, but she’s not a big fan of feeders. She noticed a hummingbird checking out the tin decorations on a window the other day (apparently they’re not all that bright), and I thought maybe I could get her something that doesn’t send them away hungry.
ok, Camilita: Mom says hi back.

And poor Dory is suffering from an identity crisis… ok, first you’re a fish, then a fish-panda, now you’re a fish-helicopter-panda? What’s next? Maybe a fish-helicopter-shoe-sportscar-panda. or a fish-tree-helicopter-driveway-panda.

Thanks to all for the help. I wish I could give best answers to all of you.

And no trolls this time, it’s kind of nice…

admin answers:

Hummingbirds are very attracted to the shades of red and other brightly colored flowers!! (or tree blossoms!)
I’ve got them in my yard every day….Here’s what they go after….
Bottlebrush tree, Fushia’s, butterfly bush, hibiscus, trumpet vine, tulip trees, bee balm, Nasturtiums, red geraniums, penstemons, lupines, petunias, coral bells honeysuckles and Columbine just to name a few! To keep them in your yard there has to be a plentiful amount of nectar availble for them. They need to eat about every 10 to 15 minutes so there constantly on the look out. They can visit perhaps 1,000 blossoms in a day, though they get there protein from small knat, spiders and other small flying insects, plus what little insects may be on the flower. Right there that’s a meal and a drink for them! LOL

Good luck….now go out and buy some plants and watch them visit your yard. I’ve got three fushias hanging right on my porch so I have the hummers right near the window to enjoy!!

Help attracting Hummingbirds to feeder!!!?

I live in a tropical Island where there are lots of different hummingbirds all year long. I first bought a hummingbird feeder that comes with a inverted bottle, but couldn’t get rid of the leaking, so I decided to make my own feeder of the Saucer feeders style. I bought a beautiful glass saucer in the dollar store, and my husband drilled some holes on the top, and I decorated the holes with red plastic flowers and hanged it in a plant wire basket, in my balcony in front of a flowering tree that hummingbirds love, but the tree is like 4 feets away from my balcony, and I live in a second floor. I hung the feeder 4 days ago, and I started to observe the hummingbirds that visit daily the tree (neighbors tree) and they feed on the flowers of the tree and keep on flying away, they seem like they don’t see the feeder in my balcony, even though it is in a visible place or they don’t recognize it as a “feeding flower”. It has red, because the plastic flowers are bright red and it has six bright red plastic flowers. I don’t know if I need to give them more time to discover it or what?? Maybe they are so used to trees and wild flowers, that they don’t seem to be intrested in visiting my balcony. I’m sure that if they knew what it is, they would love it, but how can I help them discover what that saucer with flowers is???? Is it to soon??? should I give them more time ????? please help! any suggestions would be appreciated! :)

admin answers:

Well done for your efforts in helping wild birds.

Firstly, are you filling the feeder with the recommended sugared water? If the solution is too weak or too strong, the birds may have tried it and prefer the natural flowers.

Although there is natural food sources close by, birds will often choose to rely on a regular supply of food put out by humans. It then becomes important to maintain the feeding.

It can take weeks or even months for the birds to become accustomed to new artificial feeders, so stick with it.

Chris asks…

Why are hummingbirds attracted to the color red?

I have a red hummingbird feeder in my backyard, and the birds are attracted to it like crazy, and the only reason I can think of is because of its color. Why is that?

admin answers:

Because the color shades they can see are green and red. And since most of their surroundings are green (trees) the red stands out to them.

George asks…

What flower attracts hummingbirds the most-in your experience?

I have an ever evolving hummingbird/butterfly garden, and I am looking for new flowers to plant. I have had the most success with bee balm so far. <3
Thanks for your advice.
I live in the NE USA.

admin answers:

I know that they love Fuchsia, Honeysuckle, and if space allows a Trumpet Vine.

Aside from the nectar filled flowers which you will grow, a good hummingbird garden must also consist of an entire habitat for the birds. Make certain that there will always be a source of fresh clean water available for drinking as well as for bathing.
Create both sun and shade areas within your hummingbird habitat. Your hummingbirds need places in the shade to perch on as well as to build their nests on!
Willows and Eucalyptus trees provide much of the nesting materials which your hummingbirds will use, along with collected bits of leaves, spider webs, moss, and lichens to build their tiny nests. Hummingbirds must feed 3-5 times per hour to provide enough energy to keep your hummingbirds going. Once they have chosen your garden to nest in, they may become completely reliant on your garden for for their source of food. There may be periods of time when there are no blossoms available for them to collect natural nectar. For that reason it is a good idea to provide supplemental hummingbird feeders, hung about thirty feet apart throughout your garden.

Carol asks…

What is the best way to attract hummingbirds to your feeder?

I saw a hummingbird in our back yard two separate times last week, so I set up our new hummingbird feeder near the area where I saw them. Yet they haven’t touched the feeder. How long should I wait before moving it?

admin answers:

Use 4 parts water to one part sugar as the nectar, nothing else is needed. They should find it quickly. Adding flowers to your yard that attract hummers are the best addition that you can do. See a great site on hummers at:

Your Questions About Attracting Dragonflies

Nancy asks…

I had 15 dragonflies in my back yard, why?…are they attracted to something?

admin answers:

Dragonflies are found in numbers in areas where food is abundant, which is why you are likely seeing them in your yard. In our garden throughout the summer we have loads of dragonflies. In the garden there are lots of plants and trees, as well as lots of other insects and bugs. This means an abundance of food for the dragonflies, which prey on other insects, especially flies. You’ll find them zipping through swarms of mosquitoes, mayflies, caddisflies, and ants, hunting for their next meal. This is why you’ll often see lots of dragonflies near ponds and still bodies of water – they’re breeding grounds for many species of flies and other insects, and provide lots of food for hungry dragonflies.

Hope this has answered your question well for you. Take care!!

Charles asks…

Where are the honeybees, other insects and birds?

I’ve heard some “buzz” that there’s a marked decrease in the honeybee population. I live in upstate New York. This year I bought a basil plant that was in bloom at the nursery 5 miles from my house where bees were swarming around it. Thinking to attract bees, I set it outside when I brought it home. I haven’t seen so much as a mosquito around it! At this time of year we’re usually inundated with all types of insects – ladybugs, dragonflies, mosquitoes, etc. I haven’t seen ANYTHING this year but a few hornets. Same with birds. It’s like the outdoor fauna is non-existent in my town. What gives?

admin answers:

It’s not a buzz ,in the last few years the honey bee population has lost about 60 percent of it’s population. They are all dying (mostly in N. America and Germany) and nobody can figure out why. I live in the orchard country of Michigan and the bee keepers that supply them with bees for pollination are quitting because their bees are all dying.

Mosquito’s have been hiding because of the drought but check out the lightning bugs tonight, there aren’t near as many as there were a few years ago. Butterflies? Same thing. The govt agencies are trying to keep it all quiet because they are at a loss for answers. Every now and then there is an article or news bit about all of this but it seems not enough people care. Could it be the start of something big? We’ll have to wait and see.

I have questions about flies I have to answer for homework?

What’s the name of the lantern light that shocks insects such as flies or dragonflies that shocks and kills it when it touches it? Why do flies always flying around or landing on lights? Are they attracted to it?

i have a 300 gallon pond for my res turtles. they live with some goldfish and guppies. unfortunately its attracting lots of mosquitoes. what is the best way to attract dragon flies, and suggestions on how the deter my turtles from eating dragonfly nymphs?

thanks!

Your turtles are eating your dragonflies. And you can’t stop them. Use mosquito dunks in the pond to deter mosquitoes. Check to be sure they are safe for turtles. They are safe for fish, I know.
