Your Questions About Attracting Owls

Donna asks…

baby black owl dream?

For the past 2 nights I have had a vivid dream, perhaps someone could help me understand it?
Two nights ago I had a dream that I had a baby, it was premature (i think, it was really small), and I didn’t know I was pregnant. I am 20 years old and in my dream I hated the baby and I remember going to my math class really pissed off and crying that the baby ruined my future.
Last night I had a dream that I was at my old house, I said good bye to some friends (my boyfriends ex, who I use to hate but now we are friends, and her best friend who happens to be my bf’s friend too) when they were leaving I saw a frog, with only 3 legs and when I went back I saw a baby black owl. It was so cute! At that point my dog was with me and the owl attracted it because when i tried to touch it, it flew away. When i started heading home, there was a wanted sign of that bird, with a reward of 1000 dollars, because someone wanted to keep it. Anyway, as I began to walk back home the owl followed us. It landed on my head and was friendly to me, when i went through a location with a lot of people it flew away and landed on the laundry place around my house was. I tried to get it and it scratched me, like a cat. Then it tried to jump on my arm, but couldnt, it fell. Then my boyfriend calls me in my waking life and the dream ended.
Another thing, I am ALWAYS dreaming of where I used to live 6 years ago. So ‘my house’ in my dream was that house I used to live in. Its weird, it makes me sad, because I really miss that house.
Ok thanks :)

admin answers:

It sounds like you take dreams too seriously. There are many symbols in your dream but don’t try to look those symbols up because they all differ depending on which one you are reading.

I always dream of my childhood home too. Life was easy and loving there. Those were days of wonderment and joy.

Dreams are a mixture of the days events, what you watched on TV or at the movies, and a little bit of what you ate for dinner. Please don’t worry and do try to enjoy your dreams.

I know that’s not the answer you wanted but we all wish we had a clue about our future so we look for signs. Good Luck 8-)

Daniel asks…

saw 2 woodpeckers outside my window?

in the uk, they had a flash of red
we live next to a large open space that is private property and so is nice and quiet, have had sparrow hawk and tawnny owls from this site as well.
what type of woodpeckers are they, can I attract them to come more frequently to my garden ?

admin answers:

Since I am in the US, I really don’t know what type of woodpecker you have, but I do know how to attract woodpeckers. We have at least one pair of three different species that visit our yard (Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied). They come for the suet (we have log feeders that you put suet plugs into as well as square suet feeders that take the suet cakes), and the peanuts (out of the shell and unsalted only). There are some feeders for woodpeckers that you can put a mix of nuts into as well, but we have enough woodpeckers visit us with what we offer them now, so we have not used that feeder. Nor do we offer mealworms, but have been told by other people that their visiting woodpeckers love them!

Good luck with your woodpeckers! Hope you get them to stay around. They are so much fun to watch!

David asks…

Want another Barn Owl in my area.?

About two years ago, a barn owl found attraction to my car head lights early one morning and landed in the middle of the road as if to block a prey. I was trying not to run off the road into the swamp. When the car stopped he was on the hood. My family use to tease me about it ; they don’t realize how upset I am to have lost the owl that had be around here for a long time. Everyone in the neighborhood has has sighting of him. Apparently, he must not have had a family because there hasn’t been sighting nor sound of a barn owl since. There is an increase number of small animals like field mice and rabbits. The snakes have been brave to baste in the sun across the road. Obviously the owl kept them under control.

Here in Virginia, the area is woody, and there are tobacco and cattle farmers in the area. I’m curious what usually attracts a barn owl to an area and are they loners. It would be nice to have another one around here.

admin answers:

Aww…I’m really sorry you had to go through that. It’s always sad to lose an animal you’re attached to, and even worse if you accidentally cause it’s death yourself. I do want to say one thing though. You said you tried not to run off the road, and I just wanted to say this – NEVER swerve to miss an animal on the road. Honestly, I can not stress that enough. I grew up in the country, and I know people who have died by simply swerving to try to miss an animal on the road. No matter how much you want to not hit an animal, your own safety has to come first. The only safe course of action is to hit the brakes, but keep going in exactly the same direction. I have been in cars that have hit many animals, as it just unavoidable when you live in the country and especially when you are driving long distances at night. Even if you hit a large animal, it is much safer to hit it than to swerve. Anyway, enough of the road safety subject, but I just wanted to say that, as I think it’s a horrendous waste of life to see a person die by trying not to hit an animal on the road. I am an animal-lover, but no animal is worth dying for, generally speaking.
Re: how to attract owls, I’d suggest buying or making some nest boxes and putting them around the place. Here is a website with some info. About it.

Hope you can attract some barn owls. They’re beautiful creatures. We had them where I grew up, and we ended up having one permanently in our care that had been attacked by a cat and was never able to fly again.
Good luck with bringing them into your area.

Carol asks…

all type of wildlife?

hi, i like all type of wildlife, and i am especially interested in owls! i was wondering how you can attract them to your backyard, and also deer, and hawks, birds of prey basically. I live in Massachusetts. Also, screech owls, i want to attract them in also

admin answers:

Depending on how much property you have…
Since these are all birds of prey, try creating habitat for rodents such as a brush pile. You could also place a deer feeder. The corn from the feeder would also attract squirrels (food for birds of prey) and other wildlife. Another suggestion for deer, try planting good grass (alfalfa, fescue, etc.) or other plants/flowers they might enjoy eating.
You may be able to buy or build a nesting box for owls.
Here in Missouri, our Conservation Dept. Is a great help for projects like this. Try looking up your state’s Conservation Department’s web site. They may have some suggestions and guidelines or a list books on the subject.

Mandy asks…

Please help me with my science(biology) h/w?

I have a few questions that i cant answer, can you help me with them, here they are:

1-Give one advantage of breast feeding.
2-birds and owls are nocturnal animals, what are their adaptations to capture their prey?
3-some plants are pollinated at night, how can they attract insects to them?

best answer 10 points

im in 7th grade

thnx!

admin answers:

1. Breast milk is natural and meant for feeding the baby/child, formulated milk can have harmful effects on the child (i.e. Nestle were actually targeted for the reason that their formula milk was harmful to kids!)

2. I would assume owls and most other birds have very good eye sight to be able to see in the dark, owls have soft feathers meaning they can fly quietly so the prey can’t hear them approaching.

Not sure on 3, sorry :(

Your Questions About Attracting Men

John asks…

Is it an Aries thing, or am I just good at attracting all kinds of men…?

No kidding, I always, always attract guys and they always want to get to know me better but, if they’r not really my type or they turn me off in some kind of way, I stop communication and it seems like they really become persistent. I get men who are attracted to me mentally and physically, or am just confident and that is what makes men attracted to me, any other Aries females who know what I am talking about?

admin answers:

Zodiac has nothing to do with that.
Maybe your just CUTE..

Betty asks…

Is it okey to devote you’re life to attracting men?

When you are 24 years old and still single?

I want your opinion…

admin answers:

It’s OKAY to devote YOUR life to attracting men, yes. Please learn to spell, dear — it would make me feel SO much better.

You’re 24 and single. Is there a BETTER time to attract men? (the answer is “no”, BTW).

Listen: what you’re feeling is entirely natural. I would only remind you to respect yourself, and expect the same from others.

Susan asks…

How can I stop attracting bossy, controlling, obnoxious men and attract senstive ones?

What type of women are overconfident, obnoxious, controlling, loud, talkative men attracted to? I’m consistently attracting that type and I hate it because they’re very difficult to get rid of and they’re unpleasant to interact with. I don’t know what it is about me that draws them. I’m attracted to the artistic, sensitive types but they don’t seem to be attracted to me. How can I reverse my situation? help.

admin answers:

I vaguely get the impression that you’re standoffish toward new strangers. Don’t take offense. We’re all a little that way. What I mean is it sounds like you’re waiting for the guy to make the move. Or do you mean that weeks after you get to know him, he turns into this other person? In that case, define what a sensitive guy wants, then learn where they go. If I wanted to meet party women, I go to the club. If I wanted to meet women that like certain activities, I’d go where the activities were. To attract a sensitive guy, start by asking what you want from the situation. (Even if it includes turning the tables for years of abuse.)

Sandy asks…

Tips for attracting older men?

Do you like it when younger women approach you, or do you prefer to approach them?
I don’t want to attract men older than 30, 25-30 is what i am aiming for (Im 19), should I talk about my plans for the future and such (School, career plans) and work?
Do older men really like younger women or is it just a lie made up by the media?

admin answers:

Ok Im gonna share this with you cause you seem lost.. Guys (specially older) love love love!! Younger girls!! No that is not media lies, that’s totally true! And Im sorry acting older and more knowledgeable isn’t going to do much, because they are already interested. I don’t mean to sound pom-pus, or just plain mean but that’s the truth. And I being 22 and older than you, love when a girl approches me.

Hope I helped!

Your Questions About Attracting Butterflies

Richard asks…

How to attract butterflies and hummingbirds?

I live on a mixed land of clay dirt and rocks and dirt, so my question is what is the best to plant in these areas? And I know about the feeders. I need to know what to plant. And when. Thanx so much for any and all input.

admin answers:

Depends what zone & climate you are in.

For humming birds:
If you are anywhere warm & dry then go for penstemons – P. Barbatus or P.eatonii are great or P.bridgesii . The red Ipomopsis (gilias) are also really good & tend to bloom a little later than the penstemon for a longer season. Try Monarda (in almost any climate) there are several red ones that work really well. Hesperaloe parviflora also causes a few hummingbird fights in my gardens.

For butterflies, butterfly bush is great of course, then also try milkweeds – some butterflies need them to lay their eggs on. Also they seem to love zinnias for some reason, or for that matter many different flatter flowers where they can land to drink nectar.

You should also try to attract bees for the full pollinator garden – they really will not bother you & we need more of them desperately as they are dying out. For those go for foxgloves and snapdragons, penstemons are great too – the purple ones particularly. Also Poppies are awesome as only bees pollinate them – they have no nextar but if you have the oriental poppies the bees mass in them collecting the pollen in the mornings – it is incredible & beautiful to watch. If you are somewhere dry enough one of my all time favorites is Mentzelia decapetala – but it needs to be pretty dry for that.

I hope this helped a little.

Charles asks…

What is the best way to attract butterflies to a new butterfly house?

Is there anything (other than tree bark) that you put inside?

admin answers:

Depending on the persons location and the type of butterflies in your area (no good having types that can’t handle temp humidity where the butterfly enclosure will be.unlike a zoo where heating and other things to alter situation happens..
All you need to do to get the butterflies in your enclosure is to have plants that they feed on in the yard outside the enclosure but in pots and when the butterflies come and lay their eggs on them and you see the caterpillars on the plant then remove and place in the enclosure and eventually after the cycle completes you will have you butterflies and the cycle will continue inside the enclosure provided the correct plants are in there might have to renew as will be getting a hard time in there..

Do they have small bushes that don’t have to be planted in gardens?.

I have wisteria blue, gladiolus, astilbe, phlox, lilly of the valley, bleeding heart, hollyhock, red hot poker, lupine, canterbury bells, columbine, larkspur and snapdragon.

Cardinal Vine
Lantana and Fuchsia

Here’s a whole page of the hummingbirds favorite flowers, shrubs & trees, vines & bulbs; Hummingbirds are attracted to flower colors and nectar, not fragrance:

http://www.thegardenhelper.com/hummingbird.html

Aside from the colorful nectar filled flowers, make certain that there is always fresh water available for drinking as well as for bathing. They need sunnny areas and they especially need shady areas to perch as well as to build their nests.
Willows and Eucalyptus trees provide nesting materials along with bits of leaves, spider webs, moss, and lichens to build their tiny nests.

Good Luck! Hope this helps.

David asks…

I have a vine that should attract hummingbirds. What should I feed it so it will flower?

I planted the vine last year in a large pot and leave it outside. We had alot of frost and I thought I had lost the plant but low and behold it is growing like a weed now. But, something is eating at the leaves. Help!

admin answers:

I know a woman who built a small shelter beside her house to sit and read. It’s made out of chicken wire. Corners out of rebar. It’s only about 5’5” high . Then she planted all sorts of plants around it so it would look good all summer and smell just as good. In the heat of summer she hated the thing because it was too hot so she planted a bunch of vines all of which were flowering. The third year she had it she heard a strong buzzing sound ,thought she had the biggest bee’s in the world, it was a humming bird . .. Weeks later she realized this bird had nested and was raising young. These little darlings have been coming back for 15 years.

Charles asks…

What is the best flower plant that attracts hummingbirds. i have a butterfly bush.?

I would like to plant a few more flowers so they will show up more often.

admin answers:

Here’s some I grow each year just to attract hummingbirds:
Salvia-they love the red salvia.
Scented Stock
Snapdragons
Fuschia- this is great for hanging baskets and the hummingbirds love them.
Asarina-these are big belled shape flowers that you can get in pink or red and the hummingbirds will flock to them.
Columbine-the native variety are red and the flowers dangle under the stem. I have these growing everywhere in my yard ….very easy to grow and I always see my first hummingbird around the columbine.

Here are a couple websites that are very helpful:

Michael asks…

Has anyone tried the Topsy Turvy for Hummingbirds?

I just bought me a kit and hope it will work. It comes with flowers that will attract hummingbirds. Any suggestions?

admin answers:

I get hummingbirds in my garden already but before they arrived, I did try seed pods and trays of seeds to get corinellas and such but with no luck. When the flowers are blooming, there seems to be a myriad of hummingbirds. I suppose it depends on the type of flowers that attracts them. They seem to like bell-shaped flowers more than anything else.

After hearing the sqawking of corinellas in the next block, I’m glad they didn’t come to my house.

Mary asks…

What are the names of common trees in a neighborhood that mostly attract hummingbirds?

admin answers:

Many plants with bell-like flowers will attract hummingbirds. These include delphinium, honeysuckle, foxglove, and lilac.

Your Questions About Attracting Women

Mark asks…

What is the key to attracting women?

I’m 17 and I’ve never had a girlfriend before. It seems like every time I like a girl I’m always guessing if she likes me back or not, and it ends up being no. I don’t lack self confidence and even though I’m not amazingly handsome I wouldn’t say I’m ugly. Even though I’m not a life-of-the-party kind of guy, I can still keep a conversation interesting and make a girl laugh. I play in a band and I thought girls are supposed to like musicians? What gives? Is it because I have long hair and listen to metal? Is that a turn off to girls?

admin answers:

The key to attracting women, and I’m completely, serious when I say this, is….confidence. If you don’t have it, then fake it. Really girls could sense when guys are feeling awkward or are being too nice or too needy. You have to act confident and masculine, meaning you take control…and you could learn to take control in small steps. Like smiling at a girl that you see and find pretty….many guys find this extremely hot, so learning to do this takes major guts. Also going up to a girl and telling her that she’s pretty. Asking questions about her and making her laugh.

Looks hardly matter…you don’t need muscles, a stubble, tattoos or skinny jeans. You just need to act like you know you look good and do not have any problem on what anyone else thinks of you.
Ever seen girls dating these really obnoxious guys or weird looking guys and wonder, wtf does she see in him? Well, that my friend is confidence. And you need it. But don’t worry…you’ll learn to develop it as you get more practice talking to girls…so get to it!

how come im always attracting the wrong women?

The women i like always turn out to be crazy. I’ve attracted married women, drug addicts, women who don’t know when to grow up and it might sound funny. But the women i attract usually only want to end up in bed. I know sounds great right, but as i get wiser i realize i need more from a relationship than just sex, even if it’s good sex.

Your Questions About Attracting Birds

George asks…

attracting wild birds to garden?

Hi. Ive recently moved house and have a small yard, no grass out back. I have put up a bird table and a high line with bird feeders hanging off, along with fat balls, sunflower seeds etc, but the birds are just not coming. i know they are in the near area as a couple of doors down they have a few trees and I can see them in there, so why won’t they come over to my feeders?? Does anyone have any more ideas on what i can do to attract them over??

admin answers:

Sounds like you need more cover in your yard. For now a bunch of tree branches and brush cuttings piled up around the feeders may help. The thicker and taller the better.
Also provide water.

We have a drought of birds whenever the Cooper’s, Sharp-shinned, and Red-tailed Hawks are in the neighborhood.
You may have a hawk or a shrike hanging around.

Also, cats are literally kill more birds than any other enemy. No one seems to know the definition of “HOUSE” cat.
I periodically throw a can full of stones into the corner of the yard — the commotion frightens those dang intruders without hurting them — and the birds return within minutes.

Sharon asks…

How to attract birds to my yard?

Hello there, I photograph birds for fun and am wonder what I can use to attract different birds to my yard or near it, I already see American robins, Chipping sparrows, house sparrows, a few Common crows, European starlings, Brewers blackbirds, and mourning doves. What type of things would attract more crows, cardinals, American Goldfinches, and whatever else? Also, do you have any tips for getting close to birds? thanks I live in Wisconsin btw if that helps

admin answers:

I also live in the Midwest and enjoy watching birds in my yard. Here’s how you can attract some of the most common wildbirds in the midwest: To attract chickadees, feed them sunflower seeds, suet, and peanuts. Use a hopper, tube, or platform feeder.
To attract woodpeckers: sunflower seeds, suet, corn, fruits, peanuts.
For bluebirds: suet, fruits, berries.
For cardinals: Safflower seeds, sunflower seeds.
Safflower seeds also attract: Jays, nuthatches, chickadees, and sparrows.
To Attract Pigeons: Cracked corn. You’ll also attract juncos, sparrows, and many finches.
Great for seeing many Goldfinches: Nyger (or thistle seed) in a tube feeder.
As for getting close to birds, it all depends on the species you want to get close to.
Check out this link for more information on tips for photographing various birds:

http://photo.net/nature-photography-forum/001Osh

Orioles: love oranges, berries, and grapes.
Also, make sure to keep some water out so the birds can drink and bathe. Keep it close to the bird feeders.

Susan asks…

Do birds get attracted easily by colors and shiny things?

Is there anything else that attracts birds?

admin answers:

Yes birds are attracted to color and shiny objects.Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red because that’s the color of the flower they drink nectar out of.In the breeding season females are attracted to colorful males like peacocks.Females pick colorful males because it shows that the male is healthy and he can pass on a good gene.Crows are attracted to shiny objects. They may fly off with bits of foil or even jewelry if given a chance.

Chris asks…

Bird seed attracting birds?

How fast would birds go to a whole bunch of bird seed and bread if it was spread throughout a parking lot?
the bird seed would be spread around midnight
thanks guys you’ve helped out alot

admin answers:

Very bad idea. Sounds like a senior prank;)

The birds won’t see the seed until the sun comes up. If the lot isn’t a normal source of food, they may not notice it at all on the first day. Depending on how many seed-eaters are in the territory, you could be looking at 10 birds, or 110 – but don’t expect a mob unless the area is already filled with birds. It usually takes a few days for them to discover new food sources.

Please don’t feed bread to wildlife. Bread is not a natural food source, and it’s unhealthy for birds. When left to go moldy – it’s deadly.

I’m not particularly fond of this idea. Cars and birds don’t mix – especially during nesting season.

Your Questions About Attracting Dragonflies

Donald asks…

What are some interesting insects and arachnids?

I am thinking about catching a insect/arachnid and observing it and raising it in the right conditions. What are some that are easy to find?

I normally find slugs, wasps(mud dauber, yellow jacket), bees ( bumble, honey), butterflies ( cabbage white), moths (unknown ) , ants, flies, and spiders. These are the insects I can easily find and feed to the carnivorous bugs.

I have a lot of plants that the herbivorous bugs can feed on, such as grass , trees, flowers along with tomato plants and herbs from my garden ( which I am not planning to feed it, although if I need to , I will ).
I am interested in leaf hoppers, dragonflies, some spiders, walking sticks, praying mantis, katydid..etc although they are quite hard to find.

Anyway,do you guys have any suggestions, along with ways of finding or attracting the insect? (You may also explain how to find the bugs that I am interested in , but 1 will do )
Plus I don’t want to have to buy them, or buy there food..etc

Dragonfly mating rituals, or courtship display… I would like some info about them please.?

Yesterday I saw the most amazing thing.. a big Green and yellow dragonfly or darner, was hovering over the water and bouncing up and down dipping its bum in the water… it was very weird looking you couldnt see the wings they were moving so fast and it was dipping in and out of the water. Out of nowhere another one of the same species flew over and they flew away mating. It was really very fun to watch and I was interested to know more about their mating rituals and displays. Especially because where the dragonfly was it was not very visible it was kind of under a bush at the waters edge but still another one came right away.. so I was wondering how it was attracted and if maybe they make a sound we cant hear or what because it seemd like it would have been impossible for another dragonfly to notice jus by sight. Anyway any information would be appreciated as I have never been lucky enough to see this before and it was really quite amazing.

Your Questions About Attracting Birds

Carol asks…

Problem attracting birds?

I live in the greater San Diego area on an acre of land in the suburbs. There is lots of grass on my land and an orange grove. Recently I hung a bird feeder from my patio and also put out a birdbath in the same general area. As far as I can tell, no birds have eaten or bathed. (I know there are lots of birds in the area.) Is this because it’s summer? Or is the feeder too close to windows, humans, other birds‘ nests? Any suggestions?

admin answers:

Try a few other locations. An open area, with nothing over the feeder. Maybe spread some bird food on the ground. Keep the pets away, especially cats. There are periods when birds do not visited feeders frequently. When raising young. Make sure the bird food is not contaminated with fungus or bacteria.

It would help if you could identify birds in your area. That way you could find out their food preferences. Check with neighbors that feed birds or check with a local bird watching club or Audubon.

Mark asks…

How can i attract birds to nest in our area?

I`ve tried putting seed out, but they never make a nest anywhere. We have some small trees in the front, which NO bird dares to nest in for some strange reason. It seems as if we are cursed or something.

We do have a cat and two dogs.

How can i attract them, besides giving them birdseed?

admin answers:

Birds in a backyard is an enjoyable experience for many. Children love to get involved in naming the different birds and birdwatching is a serious hobby for many people. For those who would like to attract more birds to a yard or garden, here are some great tips.

Step 1-The easiest thing to do to attract birds is to affix a bird feeder somewhere in the yard, patio or garden so they may eat. Different birds like different things: a hummingbird needs special sugar syrup in a liquid, goldfinches like thistleseed, starlings and nuthatches enjoy peanuts (raw, never salted), bluejays like sunflower seeds and sparrows like millet.

Step 2-Another easy way to attract birds is to plant a few favorite flowers of the birds. Hummingbirds enjoy red flowers, and those that produce nectar. Obvious choices are hibiscus and honeysuckle.

Step 3-Birds also enjoy fruits. Fresh or dried fruits can be used. Orioles, Mockingbirds and Western Tanagers like apples or oranges.

Step 4-Adding a bird bath to a garden or yard with no pond will also encourage birds to stop by. Birds are especially attracted to running water so a little fountain bubbling softly will be nice for them. Use recycling pumped water so that water is not wasted.

Step 5-Birdhouses or nestboxes are another way to encourage birds ‘spend the night’ at your house.

Ken asks…

how can i attract birds to my yard?

I have no lawned area, have put bird food, including fat balls around but as there is limited room and there is as yet no hedges or foliage, what plants can I put in baskets etc to attract them?

admin answers:

It is best to have bird food in the garden 12 months of the year, and they will notice it, even when not needed, such as when there is an abundance of wild food out there.

If you have fences, you could attach feeders to these. The main bird feed used in my garden are fat balls (disappearing at the rate of 1 a day at present, due to the newborn), sunflower seeds, eaten by tons of birds, and mixed seed feeds.

For tub growing, I’d go for a range of plants, some evergreen and some deciduous. This will provide shelter and cover, as well as somewhere to sit and rest. Look for a hardy Hibiscus plant, a shrub that is deciduous, and flowers for your benefit during the summer too. Find a slower growing conifer, otherwise they’ll want to be huge trees in next to no time, and this will provide some evergreen cover. Honeysuckle would be great in a tub, this produces berries for autumn/wionter feeding, as well as sweetly scented flowers during summer. Pyracantha is a wall shrub, meaning it can be grown to cover a wall – these have flowers and berries for winter feeding – loved by blackbirds etc. Blackbirds also love apples, so you could include a small apple tree, or just feed them some occasional apples – I cut the tops off them, and then they peck away at the inside.

Here are some links to photos and info:

Style your garden to suit your tastes, and incorporate something for the birds that you’d like. I’m not sure if you just would like more birds, or to attract specific ones, as some of them have special tastes – eg. Goldfinch birds love Nyger seeds (I placed this into my garden and after a couple of months, Goldfinches miraculously appeared!) Just beware of really fast growing conifers, which could take all of your light. I’m not sure where you live, so I’ve included plants that can be grown pretty much everywhere.

Finally, give them water too, to bathe in and to drink, which they may need after eating seeds. If you have a safe spot for a nesting box, put this up as soon as possible, as the birds will know where it is, long before nesting time, in preparation for use.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

Ruth asks…

How do I attract birds … not sexually, but, you know … ?

I’ve become a bird watcher recently … sign of my age, I guess lol … and I was wondering what is the best way to attract the widest variety of birds to my bedroom … uh, i mean, my backyard. Like, what kind of bird feed should I buy? I have thrown out cracked corn, but it seems to only attract one or two different species. I live in northeast Georgia, USA. Thank you..

admin answers:

In addition to various mixes of wild bird seed and black sunflower seed, you can offer nectar for hummingbirds, and grape jelly for orioles (you can get jelly feeders at any wild bird store) Suet will attract woodpeckers, nuts and pinecones rolled in peanut butter will bring in chickadees and blue jays. You can also take apples and oranges and cut them in half and peg them on tree branches (or on wooden dowels attached to a flat board hung on a tree) for catbirds and other fruit eaters. You can offer mealworms for insectivores as well.

Vary your feeders – some birds are ground feeders and will not eat at a hanging feeder; other birds prefer something about 3-4 feet off the ground.

If you want to keep squirrels out of your birdseed, get exclusionary feeders. Some work on weight – when a squirrel or large bird gets on the feeder, the openings for the feed close and the animal can not get to the seed – and some of them work on size – the feeder is encased in a wire cage, and the openings are too small for a squirrel or large bird to get through, but the small birds fit through the wire and can eat.

Don’t forget a birdbath – you will attract as many birds by providing water for drinking and bathing as you will attract with food.

Also, if your yard is big enough to place some nesting boxes away from the feeding area, you may get some birds to raise their families there. Just never place the nesting boxes close to the food, as the food attracts predators that could invade the nest boxes and destroy the eggs or eat the babies.

Steven asks…

what can i do to attract birds to my yard?

i love birdwatching. i want to attract blue jays, but any other birds are okay.

admin answers:

Go to your local pet or feed store, buy a bird seed mix. They love the sunflower seeds best (get the bird ones, the roasted and salted human ones aren’t good for the birds). Just put this out and the birds will come. I started doing this on my deck so the cat would have something entertaining to watch through the windows while I was at work…and after a few weeks had literally hundreds of birds a day come by in the mornings and evenings for seeds. Then the cat (who sometimes would sit outside and watch them) figured out how to catch the birds and I had to stop.

Try to feed them in a way they aren’t vulnerable to predators and cats (I thought I had this figured out but my cat must be smarter than me). Once a couple birds find your seeds, others will see them and it will become a zoolike endeavor. I’ve been feeding a bit lately in a more protected spot and have about a dozen species that come in for food, it’s very fun to watch!

I know one of them is not giving them that much attention because let’s face it a lot of guys drool over a knock out gorgeous women. But what else can i do to be different and get there attention?

admin answers:

“I want to be different” – That’s where most of the guys dont understand that a girl does not want something out of ordinary…..she just expects you to be yourself and most of the guys try to act more charming and caring, etc which, trust me, gets them nowhere……….. So be yourself and that will really help you…good luck!!

Ken asks…

why do political parties have a difficult time attracting women to politics?

Please guys, serious answers here please. I know there are women in politics, but not nearly as much as men. Why?

admin answers:

Well Republicans for one don’t exactly have a history of supporting causes that women might have an interest in, like abortion rights, birth control, and equal wages.

Besides, many of the women in politics nowadays, like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann, are an embarrassment to women.

James asks…

What do you think is the most important thing in attracting women?

I’m talking from a first impressions point of view. Let’s say they have not spoke to you properly what do you think are the factors. I mean could a girl want you without talking to you first or would you have to be dressed like a celeb?

From what I see girls don’t look at me while I’m at work(working with public) because of my job, even though I’m very good looking.

admin answers:

Lot’s of £50 notes.

Richard asks…

Most guys who I have known to be very successful in attracting women used thier “Smile” to the fullest?

advantage and spent very little or no money in buying gifts, flowers, resturants, etc which was also appreciated by their women. I would love to hear from you if you have had similar experiences.

admin answers:

Yes, a smile catches a womens eye and make her wonder about you!

Laura asks…

Why is attracting women so much work ?

Seriously I’m 21 in college and attracting women is so hard I don’t even try to communicate with women it’s to hard and a waste of my time plus women are backstabbers (I’m not gay BTW) I just can’t trust women (oh and i’ma lightskinned black male who isn’t attracted to darksinned women)

admin answers:

Because it is a skill required to be happy in life, and who said living would be easy, if it was, then life would be boring since there is no challenge and no consequences. So just be happy you have a normal life.
